INTRODUCTION OF HONG KONG 97 (PART II)

In matters economic, the superlatives become even more impressive. This small city of six million inhabitants is the world's eighth largest trading entity. To ensure its continued prosperity, Hong Kong has moved with the times, supplementing its tradition al clothing and toy exports with a diversified financial service industry. It remains, however, the world's largest exporter of clothing, watches, and imitation jewellery, and the world's busiest container port. Hong Kong is also China's biggest overseas investor.

Were Hong Kong merely an economic miracle, it would be a fascinating enough destination. But the territory is a cultural wonder too: a proverbial melting pot where Chinese from many regions mix with British, Americans, Indians, Filipinos, Japanese, Korean s, and people from every corner of the globe. The result is a sometimes chaotic and always colourful blend of cosmopolitan influences against a backdrop of traditional Chinese culture.
