When the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong returns to
Chinese rule at midnight on June 30, 1997, the change of flag will only add to
the uniqueness of this remarkable territory: no other land has changed
sovereignty in such a manner before. And whatever the future holds, the
territory's charm and almost hypnotic attraction will always remain. Attempts to describe Hong Kong usually evolve into a list of superlatives: the territory is one of the world's largest banking centres, its people the world's biggest per-capita consumers of cognac. It has produced the world's longest series of films and the longest outdoor escalator. The world's largest Chinese restaurants can be found here, as well as the busiest McDonald's restaurants. And the people who regularly produce the world's largest horse-race betting turnover have also built one of its biggest bronze Buddhas.
