PUBLIC ENTERTAINMENT IN HONG KONG

ANNUAL INVITATION SEVEN-A-SIDE RUGBY TOURNAMENT

The annual Invitation Seven-A-Side Rugby Tournament ("The Sevens") is a major event on the international rugby circuit, as well as a die-hard tradition for Hong Kong merrymakers. Established in 1975, the two-day fast-paced tournament, which is held in Hong Kong Stadium, promises an exciting weekend for both players and spectators.

HONG KONG DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL-INTERNATIONAL RACES

 This is a relatively recent extension of the traditional celebrations of the Tuen Ng Festival. It is organized by the Urban Council, and takes place a week or two after the traditional Dragon Boat Festival. The first international event was held in 1976 and, in 1995, 31 overseas teams participated in the races. Local travel agents and tour operators organize special tours to the colourful spectacle.

HORSE RACE MEETINGS

 The exhilaration reaches fever pitch as the thoroughbreds speed to the finish line, and as throngs of screaming fans cheer on their favourites. Horseracing is Hong Kong's favourite sport by far. From September to June the thunder of hoofbeats can be heard at two high-tech tracks: Happy Valley and Sha Tin. The season's opening and closing races are especially popular and exciting occasions, as is the New Year's Day (January 1) event.

HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL CRICKET SIXES

 Fans can see their favourite international cricket stars as teams from different countries clash in an effort to bring home the Cup. A fast-moving compressed version of the game, six-a-side cricket matches are fast and furious. The action takes place at the Kowloon Cricket Club.

MACAU GRAND PRIX

 The quiet, charming enclave of Macau - only one hour by jetfoil from Hong Kong - comes alive with the roar of powerful engines during the Macau Grand Prix. This is the only event on the Formula 3 circuit which is held through picturesque city streets. Motorcycle races and other international racing events are also held during race week.

TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

 The tennis stadium in Victoria Park hosts the annual First Pacific Bank Challenge in January, the Salem Open Championship in April and the Marlboro Championships in October/November. All are popular events on the professional tennis circuit and attract many top-seeded players.
